Just 56 days until Coachella, and I am exploring some of the bands playing. I close my eyes and point at the lineup. Today my band exploration leads to Snakehips, playing on Friday.
Snakehips I’ve at least heard of, but I can’t say I’ve ever knowingly or purposely listened to them. I started with the latest big hit: “All My Friends” featuring Tinashe and Chance the Rapper. I usually enjoy Chance the Rapper in his guest spots; he’s a better rapper than many of the headliners he works with (hello Kanye). This brought me immediately back to my club days in NYC and made me want to dance all night.
On Twitter recently, someone told me that the LCD Soundsystem song “All My Friends” was a generational anthem. I could only respond, not my generation. I don’t connect to that song at all. Wrong kind of drugs maybe. More likely because we never went back to someone’s house; there was always an after hours or another club to head to. Or maybe because the song “Sex” by 1975 starts with the same five words and I like that song better. Back to the Snakehips. I totally connect to “All My Friends” by the Snakehips and think this is a generational anthem or maybe the story of my life or something. All My Friends are wasted and my heart’s a little broken (not anymore, found my love thankfully).
I figured I better listen to some more Snakehips before I pass judgment, but I’m not totally turned off by their old school R&B/Hip Hop sound. It kind of makes me want to go to the Roller Rink and drink cherry cokes. Their other songs are okay, but are missing the hypnotic Tinashe. Unfortunately, they’re still working on their first full length and only have a few songs out, although they have produced and worked with a long list of performers. After the crazy explosion of “All My Friends” they have a lot of hype to live up to.
Will I go dance to Snakehips at Coachella?
Probably not, but never say never as there’s not much on Friday I’m dying to see at the moment (although Mbongwana Star is on the list). Sometimes I just want to chill; I feel like this would be a good set to just chill on the outskirts and people watch. Really, ya know they’ll end the set with some extended remix of “All My Friends” so I can just catch the last few minutes.
